Why a manual cleanup in Cluses

A consumer antivirus catches 70 to 90 % of threats but often leaves PUPs (potentially unwanted programs), infected browser extensions, malicious scheduled tasks and some rootkits behind. For a truly clean PC, a manual pass is needed.

Signs your PC is infected

• Pop-up ads while browsing
• Browser homepage or default search engine changed without your consent
• Antivirus screaming non-stop (sometimes a fake AV installed by the malware)
• Sudden slowdowns since opening an email or download
• Files renamed with an unusual extension (.crypt, .locked, .encrypted)
• Passwords or bank accounts compromised
• Webcam turning on for no reason

In case of ransomware

If your files are encrypted:

1. Don't pay the ransom. No guarantee of recovery, and you become a repeat target.
2. Unplug the machine from the network to limit spread.
3. Precise identification of the ransomware via ransom notes and file extension.
4. Check for a public decrypter on NoMoreRansom (European police + AV vendors consortium).
5. Otherwise, we assess what can be recovered from your cloud backups (OneDrive, iCloud, Google Drive sometimes keep old versions).

Prevention remains the best answer: regular backups + antivirus + updates.

• Automatic Windows and software updates
• Antivirus kept current (Windows Defender is enough for most users)
• Strong passwords + manager (Bitwarden, 1Password) + two-factor authentication
• Backup: external disk + cloud (OneDrive, iCloud)
• Caution with unexpected attachments and shortened links
• No installs from obscure sites (prefer official sources)
